Three-dimensional printing enables the fabrication of complex forms with high precision, through a layer-by-layer addition of different materials. Use of intelligent materials which change shape or color, produce an electrical current, become bioactive, or perform an intended function in response to an external stimulus, paves the way for the production of dynamic 3D structures, which is now called 4D printing. 3D and 4D printing techniques have great potential in the production of scaffolds to be applied in tissue engineering, especially in constructing patient specific scaffolds. Furthermore, physical and chemical guidance cues can be printed with these methods to improve the extent and rate of targeted tissue regeneration. This review presents a comprehensive survey of 3D and 4D printing methods, and the advantage of their use in tissue regeneration over other scaffold production approaches.Item 3D Automated Breast Ultrasound System: Comparison of Interpretation Time of Senior Versus Junior Radiologist(AVES, 2019-01-01) Arslan, Aydan; Ertas, Gokhan; Aribal, ErkinObjective: This study aimed to compare the automated breast ultrasound system (ABUS) reading time of breast radiologist to a radiology resident independent of the clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: One hundred women who underwent screening ABUS between July and August 2017 were reviewed retrospectively. Each study was examined sequentially by a breast radiologist who has more than 20 years of experience in breast radiology and third year resident who has 6 months of experience in breast radiology. This study investigates the association of 5-OHU incision activity with the risk of disease progression in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) regarding grade and stage. Materials and Methods: During transurethral resection of 17 NMIBC patients, the papillary tumour before monopolar resection and healthy bladder mucosal tissue from the same person were obtained using cold cup biopsy. Both the normal mucosa and NMIBC tumour were pathologically confirmed. The histological grade and stage were also determined. The 5-OHU incision activity of all tissues was measured using a radiolabelled 5-OHU modified base containing DNA substrate. Results: 5-OHU incision activity was significantly higher in all high-grade NMIBC tissue extracts compared with the corresponding normal tissues (p=0.001). However, we found no significant difference in 5-OHU incision activity in low-grade NMIBC tissues (p=0.89). There was also a significant increase in 5-OHU incision activity at the Ta/T1 stage compared with the corresponding normal tissue (p=0.001). Conclusion: The increase in 5-OHU incision activity according to the histological grade of NMIBC tissue indicates that this activity (mainly performed by NTHL1 and NEIL1 DNA glycosylases) might play a role in NMIBC prognosis. Thus, it could be used as a potential prognostic biomarker for NMIBC.Item 786T/c endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene polymorphism and coronary collateral circulation(POLISH ACAD SCIENCES, INST IMMUNOL \& EXP THERAPY, 2016-01-01) Seckin, Satilmis; Emrah, Bozbeyoglu; Biyik, Ismail; Emre, Arugaslan; Burak, Tangurek; Azmi, Sungur; Omer, Celik; Sinan, DagdelenIntroduction: In this study, we investigated the association between -786T/C polymorphism of the endothelial nitric oxide (NOS3) gene in which thymidine is replaced by a cytosine at nucleotide -786 (rs 2070744) and coronary collateral circulation (CCC) in patients with stable coronary artery disease. Methods: Sixteen porcine Achilles tendons were transected and separated into two groups. In group I tendons were repaired with a modified knotless four-strand Kessler technique using a 2/0 V-Loc barbed suture. In group II tendons were repaired with a four-strand Kessler technique using a 3/0 monofilament conventional suture and knots were tied. All specimens were biomechanically tested for ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and stiffness. Mode of failure was also noted. Results: Five specimens in group I failed by stripping of the suture from the tendon tissue, three failed due to suture breakage. In group II two out of eight tendons failed by stripping of the suture and remaining six failed by suture breakage. Median UTS value was found to be 85.96 N (range: 63.24) in group I and 64.29 N (range: 56.84) in group II. Median stiffness value of the samples in group I was found to be 5.67 N/mm (range: 4.32) and in group II it was found to be 4.53 N/mm (range: 6.23). The statistical analysis of UTS and stiffness values revealed no significant difference between the groups (p=0.17 and p=0.56 respectively). Conclusion: A knotless Kessler tendon repair made with a 2/0 barbed suture is biomechanically equivalent to a knotted Kessler tendon repair made with a 3/0 conventional polypropylene suture in ex-vivo conditions.Item A biosensor platform based on amine functionalized conjugated benzenediamine-benzodithiophene polymer for testosterone analysis(WILEY, 2020-01-01) Bulut, Umut; Sanli, Serdar; Cevher, Sevki Can; Cirpan, Ali; Donmez, Sude; Timur, SunaA novel benzenediamine-benzodithiophene polymer is synthesized for use in biosensor fabrication for the detection of testosterone. The sensory platform is constructed via drop coating on a screen-printed carbon electrode, using poly(benzenediamine-Bis{[}(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzodithiophene) (pBDBT) as the polymer layer. Testosterone antibodies are immobilized on the polymer-coated electrode surface via glutaraldehyde, which binds to the surface through the amino functional groups on the polymer backbone. The changes in the surface features due to testosterone binding are investigated via electrochemical techniques such as differential pulse voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectrometry as well as contact angle measurements. Surface morphology of the modified electrodes is characterized by atomic force microscopy. The linear range and limit of detection of the sensor are calculated. Impact of possible interfering compounds is investigated. Furthermore, the sensory platform is utilized for testosterone analysis in synthetic biological fluids.Item A Case of Burkitt's Lymphoma Mimicking Peritonitis Carcinomatosa(GALENOS YAYINCILIK, 2020-01-01) Buyuktas, Deram; Ornek, Serdar; Tecimer, Tulay; Ferhanoglu, BurhanItem A Case of Cutaneous Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma(GALENOS YAYINCILIK, 2014-01-01) Cetin, Bulent; Ozet, Ahmet; Orhan, Bulent; Tecimer, TulayItem A Case of Eccrine Porocarcinoma Accompanying Renal Cell Carcinoma(GALENOS YAYINCILIK, 2021-01-01) Mansur, Ayse Tulin; Karsiyakali, Nejdet; Demirci, Gulsen Tukenmez; Koseoglu, Hikmet; Akman, Yavuz; Yildiz, SemsiIn this case report, we present the coexistence of eccrine porocarcinoma (EPC) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in a 69-year-old male patient whose surgical resection pathology of the skin lesion in the right gluteal region was reported as EPC and concurrent radical nephrectomy pathology of the right renal mass was reported as RCC.Item A case of elephantiasis nostras verrucosa treated successfully by a new type of compressive garment(WILEY, 2020-01-01) Mansur, A. Tulin; Ozker, Emre; Demirci, Gulsen TukenmezElephantiasis nostras verrucosa (ENV) is a clinical manifestation composed of hyperkeratotic, verrucous, and papillomatous lesions and dermal fibrosis, which complicate chronic lymphedema. There is currently no cure for ENV, however, several measures have been used to reduce lymphedema and the resultant pseudoepidermal hyperplasia. Supportive dressings and compression therapy still constitute an important part of the treatment. In this report, we present a 69-year-old male patient with ENV developed due to chronic lymphedema caused by venous insufficiency. After failure of healing with conventional two- and three-layered bandages, and elastic stockings, he was successfully treated by a new type of compression garment. We recommend this user friendly garment for prevention of frictional trauma, contact dermatitis, and secondary infection, which all may complicate compression treatments.Item A case of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis associated with a homozygous 195 kb deletion encompassing the entire SLC34A2 gene(WILEY, 2016-01-01) Stokman, Lara; Nossent, Esther J.; Grunberg, Katrien; Meijboom, Lilian; Yakicier, Mustafa C.; Voorhoeve, Els; Houweling, Arjan C.Key Clinical Message With around 500 cases published worldwide, pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is a rare disorder with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. Conclusion: Our case identifies the BNT162b2 vaccine as a possible trigger for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. This rare and potentially coincidental event has no implications for vaccine administration practices. However, further research is needed to elucidate the effects of mRNA vaccines on humoral and cell-mediated immunity.Item A Cell Culture Chip with Transparent, Micropillar-Decorated Bottom for Live Cell Imaging and Screening of Breast Cancer Cells(MDPI, 2022-01-01) Ermis, Menekse; Antmen, Ezgi; Kuren, Ozgur; Demirci, Utkan; Hasirci, VasifIn the recent years, microfabrication technologies have been widely used in cell biology, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine studies. Today, the implementation of microfabricated devices in cancer research is frequent and advantageous because it enables the study of cancer cells in controlled microenvironments provided by the microchips. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and the way breast cancer cells interact with their physical microenvironment is still under investigation. In this study, we developed a transparent cell culture chip (Ch-Pattern) with a micropillar-decorated bottom that makes live imaging and monitoring of the metabolic, proliferative, apoptotic, and morphological behavior of breast cancer cells possible. The reason for the use of micropatterned surfaces is because cancer cells deform and lose their shape and acto-myosin integrity on micropatterned substrates, and this allows the quantification of the changes in morphology and through that identification of the cancerous cells. In the last decade, cancer cells were studied on micropatterned substrates of varying sizes and with a variety of biomaterials. These studies were conducted using conventional cell culture plates carrying patterned films. In the present study, cell culture protocols were conducted in the clear-bottom micropatterned chip. This approach adds significantly to the current knowledge and applications by enabling low-volume and high-throughput processing of the cell behavior, especially the cell-micropattern interactions. In this study, two different breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, were used. MDA-MB-231 cells are invasive and metastatic, while MCF-7 cells are not metastatic. The nuclei of these two cell types deformed to distinctly different levels on the micropatterns, had different metabolic and proliferation rates, and their cell cycles were affected. The Ch-Pattern chips developed in this study proved to have significant advantages when used in the biological analysis of live cells and highly beneficial in the study of screening breast cancer cell-substrate interactions in vitro.
