    Functional Reorganization in the Primary Somatosensory Cortex of Rat Following Hind-Paw Amputation: A Study of Functional Imaging with 1.5 Tesla MRI

    AIM: To learn how rat primary somatosensory cortex (pSSC) responses to the loss of inputs from hind-paw, using fMRI of an inferior magnetic power (1.5 Tesla) with special designed high-powered rat coil. MATERIAL and METHODS: Ten adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were enrolled in this study. The rats were anesthetized with ketamine injection. Xylazine was intraperitoneally injected for analgesia and muscle relaxation with careful maintenance of spontaneous respiration. Either right or left hind-paws were amputated under aseptic conditions according to predefined random allocation of the rats. A 12-channel rat surface coil developed for proper image resolution in 1.5 Tesla MR was used. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was obtained before hind-paw amputation

    Purely extradural spinal nerve root hemangioblastomas

    Spinal nerve root hemangioblastomas present mostly as intradural-extradurally. Purely extradural spinal nerve root hemangioblastoma is a very rare entity.     Stronger Together in Lab: Multi-Center and Laboratory Spine Studies Are Closer to Publication than Single-Center and Clinical Spine Studies: Snapshot of Annual Meetings of the Spine Society of Europe

    Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study of literature databases. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the predictive factors for the publication rates of spine studies. Overview of Literature: Spine research has garnered worldwide interest due to the increased number of spinal disorders in aging population. Methods: We evaluated the abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the Spine Society of Europe between 2009 and 2012. Additionally, we recorded presentation categories, study designs, research types, random assignments of the subjects, single- or multicenter-based methodologies, and significance of the results. Results: We evaluated 965 abstracts, 53.5\% of which were published in peer-reviewed journals. Publication rates were significantly higher for oral presentations (62.9\%) and prospective studies (61.3\%) as compared to the poster presentations (46.7\%) and retrospective studies (44.2\%), respectively ( p <0.001). Clinical studies contributed to about 86.1\% of the published abstracts. However, publication rates were significantly higher for laboratory studies as compared to clinical studies (70.1\% vs. 50.8\%, p <0.001). Multi-center studies were closer to publication than single-center studies (67.1\% vs. 52.2\%, p=0.009). Our study demonstrated that multi-center studies (odds ratio, 1.81

    Shunt Valve Rupture in Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Failure

    BACKGROUND: Shunt complications are common despite advances in surgial techniques and shunting technology. Proximal and/or distal catheter malfunctions are detected in pediatric and adult patients. However, valve dysfunction is rare in such cases. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 24-year-old woman presented with a history of veotriculostomy and ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) secondary to hydrocephalus concomitant with Dandy-Walker syndrome. She has had undulant headache and vision loss episodes in both eyes for 15 days. Her VPS valve was normal when manually checked, and the VPS was observed as intact on x-ray and computed tomography scan. She had high-grade papilledema in both eyes with an optical coherence tomography scan value of 55/99. Lumbar puncture was performed. Cerebrospinal fluid opening pressure was 560 mm H2O under sedation. VPS exploration surgery was performed. There was a tiny defect over the shunt valve from where clear cerebrospinal fluid was leaking. We revised the old VPS valve with a new valve of 1.5 regular pressure. Her vision improved shortly after the surgery. CONCLUSIONS: This case is a very rare example of shunt valve dysfunction that required further investigation and a new valve replacement even though the preoperative imaging was normal.

    Thoracic Scoliosis Screening in Adolescent Patients with Chest Radiographs

    Aim: School scoliosis screening programs (SSSPs) are valuable and common tools to depict scoliosis prevalence and to take appropriate measures to prevent scoliosis. Prevalence of small angle scoliosis (10-20 degrees) could be underestimated via SSSPs due to inter-rater variability of the physical examination after which possible candidates are sent to radiographic work-up. In this study, we aimed to detect the prevalence of thoracic scoliosis in adolescent patients via analysis of posteroanterior chest radiographs. Methods: Adolescent patients, who had been admitted for reasons other than spine and whose posteroanterior chest radiographs had been obtained, were included in the study. Demographics and chest radiographs were screened through picture archiving and communication system of the hospital.     Who Sets Light to the Scientific Path of Spine? Publication Rates of the Abstracts Presented at the ``North American Spine Society'' Meetings

    Aim: Publication rate of congress abstracts has gained attention in the recent literature. Our aim was to assess publication rate and the reasons behind publication of abstracts presented at North American Spine Society (NASS) 2009-2012 annual scientific meetings. Methods: We evaluated the abstracts presented at the NASS 2009-2012 annual scientific meetings. We searched abstract titles and author names through the PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar. Author specialty, origin of the abstract, journal name, time to publication (years) and content change were looked for. Results: The publication rate of the abstracts presented at NASS 2009-2012 was 48\%. The 2011 congress was the most successful one at reaching publication compared to other three years. Oral presentation abstracts were more likely to be published than poster abstracts, except the year 2011. Orthopedic surgery was the leading specialty in the number of presented abstracts (70\%), while neurosurgery was the most successful specialty in seeing publication of the presented abstracts (58\%). Conclusion: The publication rate of presented abstracts of NASS has increased compared to the previous years. Further research is needed to understand the reasons for some presented abstracts that could not have been published in scientific journals.
